commentary from Sherrie Saint John... Round 10 Table 1 has Nyman (GBR) vs. Byers (GBR). Those red shirts AGAIN! Table 2 has our very own Joel Sherman (USA) going against his fellow North American pal, Joel Wapnick (CAN). I guess we could call it a battle of the Joels! :) Table 3 has Acton (GBR) againt David Boys (CAN). We could call this a battle of the Davids, but we prefer a Battle of the Goliaths, as this was played and challenged yesterday. And a second opinion was requested. Jan Dixon says: it is NOT good! :) John Chew tells me that earlier today someone played UNWIG, which was ruled unacceptable. In a later round, another challenge came in for REWIG. Rich Baker's ruling was: If you can't UNWIG, how can you possibly REWIG? Needless to say, neither is good. Oh, I just spotted a dynmaic game: Lester Schonbrun vs. Robert Felt. Oh the stories they will tell. Another American pitted against an American is Joe Edley vs Randy Hersom. Gitonga (KEN) just beat out Lipton (USA) 455-351. Jere Mead (USA) just put down John Grayson (GBR) (A WHOPPING 630-338!!!!! I've got to hear about some of those plays!) Lester is walking over all demoralized and pointing towards Felt. I take it Felt won. Felt played OBOVATE and SARKIEST. Lester is rolling his eyes and trying to get away. No more post-game analyses for him. At lunch, Lester mentioned briefly that Felt had beaten him by playing OBOVATE near the end of the game, and that we would all hear about it soon enough. He was right. People are beginning to wander toward the lunch room as they finish their games. Wapnick and Sherman appears to be wrapped up. 470-443, Sherman. They are both still smiling, though. Wapnick, the perennial nice guy. Looks like Nyman (GBR) lost to Byers (GBR). Jim Nanavati (CAN) just played Roger Blom (AUS) and Jim won... 491-321. Roger tried NEATENER, which got challenged off. Nanavati then played ASCIDIAN. Later on he added an S by playing SORB down to the triple. It was challenged, it was good. He later played SACATONS to "seal it up." so to say..... He is happy. Byers' score 456, Nyman's score 379. Ouch. In the Boys (CAN) Acton (GBR) game, Acton 's score was 383 and Boys had the oh so close 381. David doens't think he could have won that one, no matter what he did. Acton played BEWRAP, OILWAY... the board was full of 6-letter words. RATOON, GRAVEL..... David did get OUTGIVE and INFULA. Ron Tiekert (USA) played Mike Sigley and eked out a 10 point win. 434-424. Ron did some osw words: MILKO and AGRYZE. Ron ended the game with a blank on his rack. Karl Khoshnaw (KUR) played Quek Sim Ho (SIN) and the score was 417-395. Khoshnaw pulled out the win. SEXtUOR, STEENINGS were Karl's bettter plays. Quek played REMOVALS. When I said that wasn't all that unusual, he shrugged and said: I played QANATs! :) Quek has earned 3 wins, but the tournament isn't over yet. Karl just earned his 4th at Quek's expense! Brian Cappelletto (USA) lost with a 388 to Kendall Boyd (NZ) 454. I see RESAILED, STROMAL, EUOI, ADAGIO, HUIA, FAYRE, STEELIE Norbert Saldanha (UAE) played Ifeanyi (NIG) in this round. The score was 424-379. Norbert is smiling, so I assume that means HE won. He is surrounded by his family. We've got Dion, Miriam, Dielle, and Dean. Dean, the only son, is the oldest (and a Scrabbler himself). Next come Dion, and she is all of 10. The baby, Dielle, is 9. They are both very pretty and polite young girls. It is very nice having them around. Everyone is out for lunch now. We will have more information afterwards. sherrie saint@mit.edu
